Seperti ditulis dari Geo Magz, Majalah Geologi milik Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM), Gunung Anak Krakatau lahir ke permukaan laut pada 15 Januari 1929.
Pada 20 Januari 1929, debu asap keluar dari tumpukan material gunung berapi yang baru muncul di permukaan, dan mulai tumbuh dari kedalaman laut sedalam 180 meter. Itulah gunung yang baru lahir yang diberi nama Gunung Anak Krakatau.
Berikut ini adalah foto kelahiran Gunung Anak Krakatau pada 20 Januari 1929. Saat itu tinggi pulau adalah 1.5 meter dengan diameter 4 meter:
